A true public square in the heart of downtown Rochester, NY

THIS IS THE HEART OF ROCHESTER.

Parcel 5 represents the center of Midtown development in downtown Rochester. Located directly on Main Street, the former home of Midtown Plaza has had a long tradition of shared public space that has gathered all Rochesterians and visitors for decades. We hope to revive the heart of Downtown by creating a place where the community can gather and demonstrate activity in all seasons.

THIS IS A PLACE FOR CULTURE.

This is a public square where culture can thrive through local and regional participation by bringing a mix of art, music, theatrical productions, festivals, makers, food and recreation. This will represent the best of what our city offers through our local fare and flavor. This is a place where we can pause, reflect, and play in a green space while we admire the urban landscape that surrounds us – giving us a place to belong in downtown.

THIS IS A CENTER FOR COMMERCE.

This is where new opportunities can be discovered as we celebrate a new small business core and center for downtown commerce.  Parcel 5 is a central connection between the walkable East End District and other areas of our downtown. An incremental approach to development will enable potential locations for pop-up restaurants, beer gardens, makers, artists and vendors. Together we will reanimate the Midtown core with both direct and indirect positive economic impact.

THIS IS A NEW IDENTITY FOR MIDTOWN.

We want to change the entire conversation about downtown Rochester. This is a limited and rare chance to reshape our urban core. This is not just a park, but a civic square in the heart of downtown activity. Something that Rochester lost decades ago. Our goal is to create a new active and passive shared public place where all can gather, shop, play, and rest. This city needs a central place where there can be something to do in all seasons as we benefit our city through recreation, economic impact and social connection. We need to prevent the creation of exclusive use development that prohibits our city from having a true public square, and we need your help to encourage the City to support this new identity for the center of our city.

THIS IS A PUBLIC PROCESS.

On August 10th, 2017 there is a public forum at Rochester City Hall regarding Parcel 5. We need your help. We are seeking to demonstrate strong community support for a large civic square at Parcel 5, while opposing a new Single Presenting Theater at the site. We can't do it without you. Click below to add your name in support of a civic square at Parcel 5 and share the vision (and this site) with others. Contact us if you’d like to be involved.

Parks and squares can sometimes be viewed as a frivolity, an unnecessary drain on resources or use of precious urban space. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, parks and squares reward investment disproportionately. If developed as “places” and planned around major public destinations, they build local economies, civic pride, social connection, and human happiness — all precious commodities in an increasingly congested urban landscape.
